Vanessa Williams wins Miss America title
On September 17, 1983, 20-year-old Vanessa Williams became the first African American to win the Miss America crown. For the first 30 years of the competition, African-Americans weren’t even allowed to become contestants.
Williams went on to have a successful music career, winning three Grammys. She also won a Tony Award for her performance on Broadway.
