CULTURE WEDNESDAYS

Afrobeats, different from Afrobeat, is a West African genre of music that is becoming more and more popular around the world. Some of the hottest Afrobeats artists are Wiz Kid, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Yemi Alade, and many more. Afrobeats has a sound that brings people from all over to come together and have a good time.

Afrobeats has inspired new dance moves, more Afrocentric events, and even a new love for Africa. A whole culture has formed for Africans living outside of Africa that we use to connect to the genuine feeling of being in Africa and celebrating life.

Artists in the global market are taking note of the great strides Afrobeats has made, not that it needs any validation, but Africa is being recognized for its great talents. Artists like Drake and record labels like Sony have taken notice; Drake was featured on a remix of one of the hottest Afrobeats songs, and Sony recently signed one of Afrobeats hottest artists, Davido; he was the first Afrobeats artist to sign a global record deal.

Through Afrobeats music, I have connected to Africa in a new way; I’ve learned more Pidgin (Nigerian slang), and I’ve been able to connect with some of the stories told. Africa has a voice! Music has created a platform for the world to see Africa in a new, fun way. Obviously, legends like Fela Kuti we all know of, but for this generation, Afrobeats has inspired a new confidence in those who know and love Africa. Afrobeats has inspired a series of weekly events that we can attend and feel proud of being African amongst other Africans. Other cultures join and have a great time dancing, smiling, and uniting to music that brings great joy.

Check out the video link I’ve posted, featuring a song I love, “Antenna” by Fuse ODG of Ghana! Although there are many, many Afrobeats songs to choose from, this is the first song that came to mind when I think of the fun, love, and enthusiasm that is seen in Afrobeats music and culture.

Enjoy Loves! ❤️
